President’s Message

I’m honored and humbled to be the successor Chapter President to Phil Nally.  Phil worked hard and did an excellent job for our Chapter, and he deserves our respect and accolades.  Thanks, Phil, for a job well done.

This year promises to be filled with excitement and challenges.  As well as being your new Chapter President, I’ve also agreed to be the Education Coordinator for the Southeastern Region.  In that regard, let me remind you that the Southeastern Region is host of the AGA National Professional Development Conference in Atlanta on July 7 through 10.  For 27 hours of CPE, the registration fee for AGA members is $900 and $1,100 for nonmembers.  The registration fee includes a welcome reception, three days of conference sessions, three breakfasts, and three lunches.  More information on the national PDC is included in another section of this newsletter.

In the able hands of our new Webmaster, Dan Flaherty, we hope to once again have the Chapter’s Website up and running in the near future.  An operational web site will enable us to enhance our Chapter communication by expanding beyond the newsletter and the monthly meeting.  And, speaking of the newsletter, thanks to Dan for agreeing to do this month’s newsletter while we transfer the responsibility to our new Editor, Jennifer Harper.  Jennifer will do an admirable job for our Chapter.

We plan to continue our Community Service Projects under the expert guidance of Rex Gregory.  Rex always finds worthy causes for our Chapter to support, and we appreciate his devotion to charitable giving.

Our quest to provide CPE at our monthly Chapter meetings is being aggressively pursued by Margaret Hurst, our new Program Coordinator.  For our June 6 luncheon meeting, Margaret has arranged to have Ben Gratzer, Executive Director of the Kentucky Society of CPAs, as our speaker.  Stay tuned for additional luncheon speakers and topics that qualify for CPE credit.  In addition to good food and good CPE, our monthly luncheon meetings offer an opportunity to make new friends, renew old acquaintances, and expand our professional networks.  I look forward to seeing you at all our meetings at the Office Pub and Deli.

Our new Education Director is Lee Ann Watters.  Lee Ann is in the process of planning the Chapter’s Annual Educational Update on October 14 and 15.  We have tentatively agreed with Kinney Poynter to present the Auditing Update.  Kinney is the Deputy Executive Director of the National Association of Auditors, Comptrollers, and Treasurers, and has presented training for our Chapter many times.  We had asked Dr. Jack Dyer to present our Accounting Update, but he regretfully had to decline for this year.  In his stead, we have tentatively agreed with Beth Stenberg to present the Accounting Update.  Beth is the Chief Financial Officer for Jefferson County and a member of the Governmental Accounting Standards Advisory Council (GASAC) for GASB.

Our Chapter is hosting the Regional Professional Development Conference (PDC) next April or May, and Lee Ann is busy planning that event as well.  Speakers who have already agreed to be with us include Edward B. Hatchett, Jr., Kentucky’s Auditor of Public Accounts; Russell W. Hinton, Georgia State Auditor; Sharon R. Russell, Director of Research and Professional Development for the Alabama Examiners of Public Accounts and a member of GASAC; and Arthur A. Hayes, Jr., Director of the Tennessee Division of State Audits.

The full roster of Chapter Executive Committee members is presented elsewhere in this newsletter.  Feel free to contact us for any help you need regarding your membership. The new Executive Committee will hold its first meeting on Wednesday, June 5, at Brando’s Restaurant.

Chapter Meeting Minutes

May 2, 2002

SPEAKER:   Richard Norment,

National AGA President

TOPIC:      “Lead To Succeed!”

President Phil Nally welcomed AGA members and guests to the annual banquet/meeting.  Phil brought pictures of Indian Summer Camp to share with members.  Phil also complimented Don Fields for banquet arrangements.   It was a job “well done” and we enjoyed the food.

Phil introduced Richard Norment, National AGA President, and guest speaker.  Richard is currently the Assistant Comptroller, Tennessee Office of the Comptroller, and has served AGA both locally and nationally for many years.

Before presenting his topic, Mr. Norment made some important points as follows:

·        Richard complimented Pat Bryan on her performance as Regional Vice-president.

·        Richard presented some future training opportunities and study materials that are currently available.

·        Richard said Community Service is a very important part of AGA.  He talked about the  September 11 attacks and how AGA got involved in collection efforts. He talked about a week of community service where AGA members had the opportunity to give their service back to communities where they live and work.

Mr. Norment said his theme as National AGA President was “Lead to Succeed.”  He talked about choosing the theme and what it means.  He noted that it was a great opportunity to serve as National President of a professional organization.  He said it was hard work, but hard work is part of being a good leader. He also said he enjoyed the journey, and the reward was getting to know and work with people.

Mr. Norment said he spent a lot of time in Washington D.C., but he also had the opportunity to visit many other places such as Hawaii, California, Alabama, Indiana, and even Frankfort, Kentucky.  He also said that on 3-20-02, after speaking to a local chapter in New York, he visited the site of the World Trade Center.

Mr. Norment said that most leaders are not the most qualified but make themselves available.  He encouraged all members to get involved in leadership roles.  He also encouraged members to read “Leading at the Edge” by Dr. Dennis Perkins.  Richard went on to say that AGA leaders must be committed to a vision.  He said our mission is to serve and Advance Government Accountability through:

·        Public Service – working to change the image;

·        Education and Professional Development – improving the development of leadership skills; and

·        Professional Certification – CFGM – certifying that AGA members have the skills and training that will move them to a mark of excellence.

·        Competence (learning by continuing education)

·        Broad product line (competing with the larger banks)

·        Technology Committee (staying up-to-date on banking technology)

Phil Nally presented Mr. Norment with a gift as a token of our appreciation.

Phil receives his President’s Plaque from soon to retire Pat Bryan – Regional Vice-President
