April 2004 - Volume XXIV, Issue 20

President’s Message

I would like to offer a sincere thanks to all of those who contributed cash, pet food and other supplies to our drive for local animal shelters.  We collected a substantial amount of supplies at our March meeting, which were then turned over to Regina Mitchell of the Franklin County Humane Society.  Ms. Mitchell was our speaker for the day and enlightened us about the workings of the FCHS.  This drive was very successful showing once again the generosity of our membership.

If you missed out on our April meeting, you really missed out.  Our speaker was the Kentucky Society of Certified Public Accountants Executive Director, Penny Gold.  Ms. Gold gave a very informative speech on the issues currently facing the KSCPA and the Industry as a whole.  I would like to thank Penny for taking the time to come and speak to us.

As you can see our meetings cover a wide array of subjects.  If you haven’t been to a meeting in a while, come out and see us.  We always have a good time and you just may learn something.  Many of our meetings such as the one with Ms. Gold, are eligible for CPE and if this isn’t enough reason to come maybe you will come for the cheap lunch.  The chapter subsidizes all lunches so the cost is $3 to members and $5 to non-members.

Hope to see you soon!

Chapter Meeting Notes For March

The Central Kentucky Chapter met at the Office Pub and Deli on March 4, 2004.  There were 18 members and guests in attendance.

President Roy Hunter introduced the speaker, Regina Mitchell, from the Franklin County Humane Society.  Ms. Mitchell gave a brief history, stating that two women started the Society in 1949.  It moved to its current location in the Bellepoint area in 1969.  The shelter is named for Irene Miller, one of the founders.

The Society has received 1,118 cats and dogs since July 1, 2003, with more cats coming to the shelter than dogs.  There have been 293 adoptions and 108 pets returned to the owners.  Over 800 animals have been euthanised during this period.

Thanks to a bequest, free spaying and neutering was offered earlier this year.  Over 120 cats were neutered.

The Society charges an $80 adoption fee, which helps to cover the costs associated with running the shelter and the spaying or neutering of the animal.  Each Tuesday, lower cost spaying and neutering is offered.

The Society has a $225,000 budget, with $56,000 coming from Frankfort and Franklin County.  It is a non-profit organization.

Animals at the Society are put on the petfinders.org website to encourage adoption.  Portable adoptions are held at various pet stores throughout the area.

Volunteers are always needed.  A new volunteer manual has been produced outlining the duties and needs for persons interested in donating their time.

The facilities are located in a flood zone and are in need of repair.  Long range, the Society would like to find a new home with improved capacity and facilities.

There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned.
